Did you know that certain shots and medications can affect blood sugar? These medications can be very dangerous for people with diabetes and those taking them may even need to adjust their insulin dosage.
For instance if you get a cortisone shot it can cause your blood sugar to spike up and even stay high for days afterward. You would certainly need more insulin during those couple days.
Other medications that can spike your blood sugar are,
- Prednisone , corticosteroid pills
- Olanzapine (Zyprexa)
- Quetiapine (Seroquel)
- Clozapine (Clozaril)
- Risperidone (Risperdal)
- Aripiprazole (Abilify)
- Ziprasidone (Geodon)
These following medicines can higher or even lower the blood sugar,
- Gatifloxacin
- Ciprofloxacin
- Levofloxacin
- Moxifloxacin
The best thing to do is to discuss with your doctor before taking any medications, mention it to your pharmacist , and monitor your glucose levels carefully.

That is interesting. It would be good for diabetics and even pre-diabetics to take note of those meds that can spike up blood sugar levels.
Sometimes when dealing with diabetes it would help to complement medications with natural remedies that promote prancreatic, liver and digestive health while reducing the deep seated cravings for sweet foods. This becomes a more sustainable and holistic treatment for diabetes.
Thanks for listing the different medications that affect diabetes. One on your list a friend of mine takes and we couldn't figure out why his blood sugar has elevated after taking the medication every time. Thanks you were a big help. :)
