A Swedish study found that men who developed diabetes during middle age were more at risk for developing Alzheimer's later in life.
Men who had low insulin levels were one and a half times more likely to develop various types of dementia, then men who had normal insulin levels. They also looked at other components such as cholesterol, education, and the like, but the only thing that came out as a link was the level of insulin.
This study followed these men over the course of thirty-two years and is very important since diabetes is on the rise all over the world. No one want to see those same people suffer also from Alzheimer's in later years.
Now that they know insulin is important for brain function, the next studies will be trying to understand the entire process so that we may use that information to battle these diseases.
