A study was done on over 3200 people with a gene linked to diabetes type 2. It was found that people who had this were 81% more likely to develop the disease. Now there is a drug called Glucophage that reduces the risk of diabetes, however those people who took it only reduced their risk to 62%. It was found also that people who dropped their body weight by 5 to 7% and exercised reduced their risk to 15%.
That is a huge reduction in risk. That is how important lifestyle change is to a diabetic. I know it's scary and you want to do what your doctor says, but remember that although your doctor may have told you to diet and exercise he is more likely to just stress the meds and insulin. That is because it is very difficult for people to change lifetime habits and most don't, so the meds are their only option.
You have got to decide whether you want to beat it out of your life and keep it at bay, or submit to it and become dependent on insulin and other meds. It's up to you. Will you commit to being a survivor or let it run your life?
Remember also that there are many others who are sick with not only diabetes, but other very serious diseases who don't have the choice that we have. What do you think a cancer patient would say if they were told by eating right and exercising they could be cured. I think they would do anything to be in our shoes, don't you?
