Many of you may be asking what the difference is between type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes is usually found in children and young adults. It is the absence of insulin in the body.Glucose, the sugar, needs to bond with the insulin so that it can be taken into the cells to nourish them. Without insulin the glucose will not be absorbed into the cells and they will start to starve.
Type 2 diabetes is usually found in adults and is slower to develop. It is when the body does not have enough insulin to combine with the glucose. In my case and in many others cases I think to begin to fight this we need to take responsibility. So I would like to rephrase the definition of type 2 diabetes to state that we are taking in too much glucose for our bodies to handle. Hens the risk factor of obesity for diabetes.
If you don't have it or don't know if you have it or will have it, here are some of the risk factors.
- obesity
- family members who have had it
- gestational diabetes
- poor diet and little or no exercise
If you think you are at risk, see your doctor. Finding out early is important in that untreated diabetes can affect your nerves, eyes, heart, and kidneys.
