DIABETES AND GLAUCOMA

There has been a twenty year study of nurses which says that women with type 2 diabetes are 82 percent more likely to develop glaucoma.
This happened to me and rather quickly. For awhile I thought I would loose my sight entirely. I went on insulin, started to eat right and exercise. The result being that I got off the insulin, and got my sight back with just the diet and exercise, after only about two months.
While I was doing research the other day I came upon a quote from someone who very wisely said,"if a condition can be treated with diet and exercise, medicine should never be prescribed as a first step".
The first thing you need to know about what the proper diet for a diabetic is, is the portions. So even if you are eating all the right foods, if your portions are three to six times what they should be you will not be able to control the disease.
I believe the first step is eating slower. It takes our brains about twenty minutes to register to us that we are full. If you eat quickly you won't feel full till you have eaten way to much. The best way to handle this is for you to six smaller meals rather than three larger ones. This also helps with the sugar because certain foods will give your body a sugar rush in a very short amount of time. Where as other foods will release the sugar slower into the body after you've eaten.
Another tip is to drink a glass of water fifteen or twenty minutes before the meal. That way when you start your meal you already have kind of a full feeling. If you click on my link to Fruit and VeggieVille under lemons and limes you will find a great lo-cal refreshing drink that would be great for just this purpose.
Don't give up! Keep watching this blog for more diet and exercise tips for diabetics, and as always, consult your doctor before making any changes.
