Proper care of your gums and teeth can help control your diabetes type 2.
A1C is a measure of diabetes control in the long term. People who have periodontal disease often have higher levels of insulin resistance and A1C levels.
Several studies have been done that link gum disease and type 2 diabetes. One study suggests that those who have periodontal disease have twice the risk of insulin resistance as those with healthy teeth and gums.
Another study found that the infection in the gum tissue could travel through the bloodstream and cause cells to become insulin resistant. People who get care for their gum disease reduced their levels of the A1C.
Dentists suggest that doctors should ask their patients who have difficult to control glycemic readings, about their teeth, gums, and dental visits. This could potentially save some lives in the long run. When's the last time you had a dental visit?
