If you just think about it a minute it's only common sense. However a study needed to be done as always to verify the theory that it's better to get diabetes as an elderly person rather than a middle aged person.
The reason is clear to me at least, that if a person develops the disease when they are let's say forty-five, and it's allowed to run it's course, then by the time the person is sixty-five, they have already damaged the nerves in the feet, gotten the retinopathy, and have increased the medication they need to control it.
If, however, they do not get the disease until they are sixty-five, they will not have the advanced damage until they are about eighty to ninety years old.
So the sixty-five year old in the first example is suffering from an advanced case whereas the sixty-five year old from the second example has very mild and new symptoms.
The whole point being is that if you are going to get the disease, it's better to put it off as long as possible. Duh!
